What do you know of their mechanics?:
Proteans are mostly a self-efficient type of entity, capable of repairing themselves using steel and various materials. They are vulnerable to EMPs but they can be set up to be very durable with the right materials. Their "blobform" can be used for escape or stealthing.
Steel is required for repairs as nobody else can assist, unless they stick sheets of steel into the blobform with the Help intent.
What do you know of their lore?: As it stands their lore is still being written so, proper knowledge is unknown.

I was thinking that my engineer husky, Ren Graes, would've ended up getting wacked by a crime organization he ended up getting in the way of [accidentally by stopping his car in front of a getaway vehicle] and was beaten to a near-death state.
Sadly, resleevers and mental backup systems had undergone a tremendous malfunction in the area [terrorist attack most likely. Probably from a group who saw the whole resleeving process an 'affront to the natural order'] and the only option was to transplant his mind into a Protean Core to save his mind... and his life.
Ren would be okay with this... and he'd still continue his job.
